Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about data recovery, computer repair, backup setup, secure drive wiping, refurbished computers, and local IT support in the Bitterroot Valley.
Data Recovery
How much does data recovery cost?
Pricing depends on the device type, storage size, and complexity of the issue. USB and SD card recovery typically ranges from $120–$250, logical hard drive recovery ranges from $250–$450, and advanced logical recovery ranges from $450–$700.
Do you offer free diagnostics?
Yes. Bitterroot Data Recovery offers free evaluations for data recovery and computer repair. I will inspect the device, explain what I find, and provide pricing before work begins.
What does “No Data, No Charge” mean?
For data recovery cases, if recoverable data cannot be recovered, there is no recovery charge. This helps protect customers from paying for a failed recovery attempt.
Can deleted files be recovered?
Often, yes. Deleted files may be recoverable if the storage device has not been heavily used after deletion. The most important thing is to stop using the device immediately to reduce the chance of overwriting the lost data.
Can you recover data from a formatted drive?
In many cases, yes. Accidentally formatted drives, RAW drives, corrupted partitions, and missing files may be recoverable if the device is still readable and the data has not been overwritten.
Should I keep using a failing drive?
No. If a drive is clicking, freezing, disconnecting, showing errors, or becoming very slow, continued use can make recovery harder or even impossible. Power it down and have it evaluated.
Computer Repair
What types of computer repair do you offer?
I help with slow computers, Windows boot problems, software issues, malware infections, SSD upgrades, data transfers, new computer setup, and general laptop or desktop troubleshooting.
Do you work on both laptops and desktops?
Yes. I work on both laptop and desktop computers, including home systems, small business computers, and refurbished systems.
How much is virus and malware removal?
Virus and malware removal typically ranges from $75–$150 depending on the condition of the system and the amount of cleanup required.
How much does a Windows reinstall cost?
A clean Windows reinstallation typically ranges from $50–$100. Data backup or transfer may be additional depending on the situation.
Can you upgrade my computer to an SSD?
Yes. SSD upgrade labor is $50 plus the cost of the SSD. This is one of the best upgrades for improving boot times, program loading, and overall responsiveness.
Backups & Data Protection
Can you set up automatic backups?
Yes. I can configure automated external drive backups, cloud backups, or small business workstation backups to help protect important files from accidental deletion, drive failure, or malware.
How much does backup setup cost?
Backup setup typically ranges from $120–$300 depending on the system and backup needs. An optional 1TB backup drive plus setup is available for $180.
Do I need a backup if my computer is working fine?
Yes. Drives can fail without warning, files can be accidentally deleted, and malware can damage or encrypt data. A proper backup is much cheaper than emergency data recovery.
Secure Drive Wiping
What is secure drive wiping?
Secure drive wiping removes data from a hard drive or SSD before resale, recycling, donation, or business equipment retirement. This helps prevent personal or business data from being recovered by someone else.
How much does secure drive wiping cost?
Single drive wiping typically ranges from $40–$80 per drive. Full workstation wipes start at $150, and discounted pricing is available for multiple drives.
Do you provide proof of data destruction?
Yes. A certificate of data destruction is available for secure drive wiping services.
Refurbished Computers & Setup
Do you sell refurbished computers?
Yes. Refurbished laptops and desktops are available when in stock. Each system is tested, cleaned, updated, and prepared for normal use before sale.
Can you transfer files to a new computer?
Yes. New computer setup and data transfer typically ranges from $75–$150 labor. This can include documents, photos, videos, browser bookmarks, email setup, updates, and basic software setup.
Can you help set up email, printers, or Wi-Fi?
Yes. General IT support is available for homes and small businesses at $45 per hour. This includes printer setup, email configuration, Wi-Fi troubleshooting, Microsoft 365 assistance, and new device setup.
